How to Find a New Job in 2022

I remember some years ago I attended a career lecture at my university. The topic was our CV. The career consultant asked students what is the purpose of a CV. Some students said that a CV is used to show skills, others said that it is used to show experience. The consultant disagreed and explained that a CV is used to get someone shortlisted for an interview.

Fast forward things have changed. We now have programs, algorithms and even Artificial intelligence before actually getting shortlisted for an interview.

In other words, an algorithm will decide if you are suitable for a specific position. Then an interview will follow. Is there a way to beat the machine? Easy, by using the below simple rules you can beat the machine (yes, I do love this expression) and increase your chances of getting an interview. another machine before submitting.

Rule 1: The Layout

There are many suggestions out there but my preferable layout is the following:

CV Layout

Full Name and Contact Details: Clearly indicated at the beginning of the CV to make it easier for the recruiters to call you for an interview.

Professional Summary: Your personal elevator pitch! A short paragraph that will be used to show off your skills and the reason you believe you are suitable for the specific position.

Work History: Your current and previous positions. gap years CV link to medium

Education:

Skills: I’ve divided this section to Technical and General skills.

Languages: I suppose you can merge this section to Skills.

Rule X: Two Pages

The old rule still applies. Your CV should not be more than two pages. Some exceptions might apply like an academic CV but in most cases your CV should include your recent positions and your recent skills. No one cares about your grades in high school or that summer job you did 20 years ago.

The two pages will ensure that you have a succinct and relevant CV. If you don’t know what else to remove to get to the two pages, then you need to change the format.

Rule X: The Fomat

Unless you are a graphic designer then your CV must be in a clean text format. Word documents are preferred, so forget about those ugly PDF file formats. It will help the recruiter to skim it easily and most important it will help with the ATS tracking. What is ATS you say? keep reading.

Rule X: ATS Scanning
