Major Types of AI/ML & Common Use Cases
Introduction
Machine Learning (ML) allows systems to learn from data. So imagine you have a robot that has never seen a fruit before. You want to tell the difference between a dog and a cat. If you wanted to do that using algorithms, you would describe how a dog looks and how a cat looks and hope it can distinguish between the two.
But in ML you give the robot lots of pictures of dogs and cats and let it “learn”.
But how exactly is this done? There are three many ways.
Supervised Learning
This is the most common type. In supervised learning, the algorithm learns from a dataset that is labeled. This means each data point in the training set has a known “correct” answer or outcome associated with it. The algorithm’s goal is to learn a mapping function that can predict the output for new, unseen data points.
Analogy: It’s like learning with dog and cat images. Each image is the input data and it has a label, for example “this is the cat”. The goal is to learn to predict the answer for new questions you haven’t seen before.
Classification: Predicting a category (e.g., Is this email spam or not spam? Does this image contain a cat or a dog? Is this customer likely to churn or not churn?).
Regression: Predicting a continuous value (e.g., What will the price of this house be? How many units of this product will sell next month? What temperature will it be tomorrow?).
To demonstrate supervised learning, the Python library scikit-learn can be used.
In supervised learning, dataset contains:
- Features (Input): These are the measurable characteristics or attributes of our data points (often represented as X).
- Labels (Output/Target): This is the correct answer or category we want to predict for each data point (often represented as y).
The goal is to train a model that learns the relationship (the mapping function) between the features (X) and the labels (y). Once trained, the model should be able to predict the label for new, unseen data points based on their features.
Example: Classifying Iris Flowers (1)
We’ll use the classic Iris dataset. It contains measurements (features) for three different species of Iris flowers (labels). Our task is to build a model that can predict the species of an Iris flower given its measurements. This is a classification task (a type of supervised learning where the label is a category).

main()When you run this you will see that there is a 88.89% accuracy on test data. The model correctly classifies new flower samples based on their measurements, showing the supervised learning process where the model learns from labeled training data and applies it to make predictions.
Unsupervised Learning
In this type, the algorithm learns from data that is unlabeled. There are no predefined correct answers. The goal is for the algorithm to explore the data and find structure or patterns on its own.
Analogy: The robot has a giant pile of pictures, but you don’t tell it what any of them are called. There are no labels. Robot will start looking at similarities and create pile A and pile B. The robot doesn’t know that pile A = dogs and pile B = cats but it knows that the two piles share similar features.
Clustering: Grouping similar data points together (e.g., Segmenting customers based on purchasing behavior, grouping similar news articles).
Dimensionality Reduction: Simplifying data by reducing the number of variables while retaining important information (e.g., Used in data visualization or to improve performance of other ML models).
Association Rule Learning: Discovering relationships between variables in large datasets (e.g., “Customers who buy diapers also tend to buy beer” — the classic market basket analysis).

We’ll use the same Iris dataset, but this time, we will pretend we don’t know the species labels. We’ll use a clustering algorithm (K-Means) to see if it can naturally group the flowers into distinct clusters based purely on their measurements. We’ll then compare the resulting clusters to the actual species labels to see how well the unsupervised method performed.

Reinforcement Learning (RL)
In this type of learning the algorithm (called an “agent”) learns by interacting with an environment. It performs actions and receives feedback in the form of rewards or penalties. The goal is for the agent to learn the best sequence of actions (a “policy”) to maximize its cumulative reward over time.
Analogy: The robot’s goal is to get as many points as possible. If it picks the picture of a dog you reward it with 10 points (the treat). The robot will first skim the images without knowing anything (the guessing). Then over time, the robot will develop a policy since it will get treats for dog pictures.
Key Tasks: Game playing (like AlphaGo), robotics (learning to walk or grasp objects), navigation systems, optimizing trading strategies, controlling complex systems (like HVAC).

Common Use Cases
Supervised: Predicting customer churn, identifying fraudulent transactions, classifying images, forecasting sales.
Unsupervised: Customer segmentation for marketing, finding anomalies in network traffic, topic modeling in documents.
Reinforcement: Training robots to perform tasks, optimizing resource allocation in real-time, developing AI for complex games.
